It's cutting them loose and having the pack run the rabbit until it gives up and goes in a hole or gets caught. And although the dogs usually don't catch it, they run like they want to. Just me and my pack of hounds, in any condition, on any day, in the roughest places I can find . . .

Strength of Character

When the going gets rough . . .

It's easy to be strong when everything is going right. Anyone can be brave or tough on a good day. BUT, when everything goes wrong and a situation worse than you can even imagine happens, then you find out about someone's character.

On a horrific morning, Scott Derrick showed character and strength. At only 21 years of age, he braved the attacks on our beagles. He dealt with the loss of his little brother's dog that he was entrusted. He dealt with the fear of a pack of wolves and seeing one only 40 yards away. He dealt with the loss of his hunting companion, Show Me.

Although Tuesday was by far the worst day I have ever had with beagles, I did find something to take from it. I found respect for a friend who showed character in the hardest of conditions.

  1. I feel terrible for Scotty. I got to walk and talk with this fine young man in the wild forest of Michigan's Upper Penensula, and enjoyed his company. Losing his hound is a hard hard trial for him or anyone. But, they grow them boys up tough in Appalachia.
    You are in my prayers.

  2. Bless your heart Scotty. I have talked to Scotty a lot and he is a good boy. Way to be brave brother.

  3. I have a dog for sale on the American beagler forum but would gladly give him to these fine young men If they would be interested. I have been working out of town and have two small kids so all my beagles are going for a year or two. He is older but an excellent dog and bred very well. I live in Michigan but would drive down I-75 a couple hours to meet you. Call me at 989-513-0541. Thanks Mike Ware

  4. Thanks Mike. They have several dogs, it is just that they had two killed that they had raised from puppies.
