It's cutting them loose and having the pack run the rabbit until it gives up and goes in a hole or gets caught. And although the dogs usually don't catch it, they run like they want to. Just me and my pack of hounds, in any condition, on any day, in the roughest places I can find . . .

I'd Rather Run BIg Males But . . .

Tonight I took Chip and four females. The females handled great, ran almost nonstop, jumped a lot of rabbits, and had few checks. They packed well and ran real close for their speed.

So why is it that I like to run 15" males? They may have a little more stamina, but the females never quit. They may have a little more speed, but the females pound almost nonstop. They may jump more rabbits, but the females ran the whole night.

I guess is must be a little bit like deer hunters that want to shoot a buck. There is a certain feel or attitude when killing a buck instead of a doe. Maybe there is a stigmatism that I have been unwilling to give up on.

For the last 15 years I have always leaned towards the biggest males in every litter. But the more I run these females, the more inclined I am to keep female pups. When running for pleasure, you just can't beat running this bunch of females.  And what's more important than that?

I ran Chip, Diamond, Dixie, Tony, and Village Girl.  The temperature was 35 degrees.
